The title of the Follies’ all-new, 16th edition, Gotta Dance!, might lead you to think the Follies is just following the current public infatuation with dance. Witness the popularity of television shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance; London’s soon-to-open Dirty Dancing stage musical (sold-out six months prior to opening); and record attendance at ballroom dance schools and competitions nationwide. “But no,” says Follies impresario Riff Markowitz, “this is nothing new to us—on our stage, we’ve been mad about dancing for 16 years.”
“This year’s theme reflects our experience that dance is precisely what a dancer must do—regardless of age,” adds Markowitz. “Our cast—even those in their 80s—performs nine shows every week! Do that and dance is more than just your job, it’s your passion and your mission in life. And our audiences have told us that the more dancing we include in each new Follies, the better they like it.”
In addition, the Follies’ newest edition features three legendary, lady singers. Kicking off the season and playing through December 31 is the celebrated Gogi Grant. Grant’s 1956 recording of “The Wayward Wind” knocked Elvis Presley from the top of the charts and remains one of the top 40 singles of the past half-century. In recent years, she has enjoyed sold-out nightclub runs in New York and Los Angeles featuring her own hits and the great standards of Gershwin, Porter and Irving Berlin.
January 10 through March 18, 2007, dynamic songstress Gloria Loring returns by popular demand from the Follies’ 12th season, when her performance was such a showstopper it was selected as the climactic cut on the currently available CD “Great Moments At the Follies, Vol. 1.” Most often remembered as Liz Chandler on NBC’s Days of Our Lives, Loring also had a #1 recording with “Friends and Lovers” in 1986, and has made hundreds of appearances on TV talk and variety shows.
Closing the season, March 21 through May 20, will be Mimi Hines, an instant sensation in 1958 when her Tonight Show rendition of “Till There Was You” reduced host Jack Paar to tears. Hines and her comedy partner, Phil Ford, quickly became favorites on The Ed Sullivan Show and later graced the Plaza Theatre stage during the Follies’ second season. Time has done nothing to diminish the magnificent voice and comic timing that won Hines the coveted role as Barbra Streisand’s replacement in the Broadway production of Funny Girl.
This season’s international variety acts include Russian quick-change artists Tatiana and Victor Manjos (all season), Canadian visual comedian Denis Lacombe (through December) and, from Argentina, the explosive Dancing Gauchos (January through May).

If you wonder how the Follies could possibly top its 15th edition, as Al Jolson used to say, “You ain’t heard nothin’ yet!”
In the coming months, Follies Director of Sales Terry Jardin will be attending the following tradeshows and would be delighted to meet with you or your representative about the many ways the Follies can assist you in filling your motorcoaches!
