Greetings, Darlin's! Since we last spoke, the Follies' newest edition entitled Gotta Dance! and our celebrated guest star, Miss Gogi Grant, have debuted to rave reviews. At 82, Grant still astounds audiences with her magnificent singing voice. If you haven't yet seen her, I strongly urge you to do so before her final Follies performance on December 31. And if you'd like to see a brief clip of Gotta Dance!, please visit "Our All New Show" page on the Follies' website.
We are now in the midst of our annual Toys-for-Tots drive. If you are visiting the Plaza Theatre between now and December 17 (when we close for our holiday break), we invite you to bring a new, unwrapped toy to place in our lobby collection bin. The extraordinary ladies and gentlemen of the U.S. Marine Corps organize this program, so I encourage everyone to support their esteemed efforts. And for Follies Favorites, 13-season Follies alumna, Judy Bell, has shared her recipe for roast duck on the Favorites' "Members Only" webpage. This appears to be a Thanksgiving turkey alternative in Miss Bell's home state of West Virginia. At the very least, it keeps the duck population under control throughout that state's municipal parks and lakes. In the coming weeks we'll be announcing several new items including a Follies holiday music CD and an online discussion board. I'm sure you'll find both most enjoyable, so please stand by for more information. This year we'll be dark the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. My Long-Legged Lovelies and Dapper Dandies require a day off to bake their pies and stuff their birds before the actual holiday since we'll be performing a 1:30 p.m. matinee on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. What a perfect place to send your houseguests for the afternoon who "just want to help" with the cooking! (Remember last year when Uncle Saul deposited your bowl of candied yams upside down on the kitchen floor?) We all have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving, but let us also be mindful of those around the globe who will not be with family on this holiday but who will spend it with comrades in the service of country. To them, we send our greetings and our gratitude. How sad it is that we must be at war. Be well, and, until I see you here in our Follies audience, keep dancing!
There are only a few teams in the world today who excel at the traditional art of magic transformation (or "quick-change"). Among these are the husband-and-wife team of Tatiana and Victor Manjos, both 52 and making their debut this year at the Follies. The Manjos were born in the former Soviet Union and met while performing with the Moscow Circus. They have since toured throughout Europe and the Americas, and were prize winners at the Seventh International Festival in Massy, France. Their television appearances include Germany's long-running Stars in der manege ("Stars in the Arena"), and Sabado Gigante on Miami's Spanish-language Univision. In 2003, they were featured on the Fox network talent show, 30 Seconds to Fame. "Quick-change acts - sometimes called 'Protean Acts' - were staples of vaudeville," explains Follies impresario Riff Markowitz. "In fact, 'quick-change artist' remains a common term for someone who can instantly alter his image. And as the recent television hit, America's Got Talent, demonstrated, magic transformation can still delight and amaze modern audiences."
