September 2008

Greetings, Darlins'

Riff Markowitz | The Follies ManToday, “Bells Are Ringing” – the phones that is – as we re-open the Follies Reservations and Box Offices, in anticipation of our 18th season debut on October 28 when we will celebrate Route 66. Our friendly and loveable reservations agents are anxious to share with you summer vacation stories and reserve your favorite seats for our all-new show, Get Your Kicks! And next month, we’ll include our agents’ annual “class photo.” Apparently, they want their summer suntans to fade a bit lest you think all they did was vegetate since you last called.

For those of you in California, Arizona and Nevada who received last week’s special message about the Route 66 Rendezvous and were able to attend, I want to thank you for visiting our booth there in San Bernardino. Here and below are a few of the hundreds of photos taken with our Follies Friends ... new and old! A link to the complete gallery is included where you can download your own photos.

While there, we heard so many folks tell us their personal recollections of Route 66 that we decided to create a special page on our website to share them. We’ve included instructions below on how to send your memories and photos. Beginning next month through the end of our season, we’ll also select a story to be included in Paul McCartney & Fansthis monthly newsletter.

Did you hear that none other than former-Beatle Paul McCartney toured Route 66 this summer with his new girlfriend? Sir Paul and flame motored in his ’89 Bronco through such towns as Amarillo and Springfield, much to the delight (and surprise!) of fans along the way.

Finally, I always enjoy reading the hundreds and hundreds of notes and emails you send me – what better way to spend my day off? Occasionally, I even like to share them with our newsletter readers:

Dear Riff,

I'm sure you've heard every superlative available, so I'll just say, "I have loved every [Follies] show I've seen.”

As a life-long frustrated chorus boy (whose life didn't go that path), after seeing a performance about six or seven years ago, I went back to Seattle, signed up for a two-month tap class, bought my shoes and started tapping. It's always looked so easy, but man was I wrong! Never have I sweated so much and enjoyed it more! I was 61 or 62, overweight with history of a myocardial infarction.

My future plans are to return to Earth as a chorus boy or I won't come back.  Just maybe I can grow up to be in the Follies 'cause I'm sure it will still be running.

Thanks to the entire Company for entertaining and inspiring thousands and thousands and thousands of folks.

Don H., Retired Guy

All of us here at the Plaza Theatre appreciate his kind words and look forward to his return to this mortal coil as a Follies chorus boy - albeit an aged one.

Until the next time, just stay alive!

ROUTE 66 RENDEZVOUS RECALLS EARLIER ERA

VeronicaFender SkirtThere was a time when cars had fender skirts, curb feelers, and Continental kits; parking brakes were called emergency brakes; and accelerator pedals were called foot feeds. While these terms have long since passed into our collective memories, they were still very much in evidence the past four days at San Bernardino’s 19th Annual Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous.

With 1,900 classic cars on parade, hundreds of food and merchandise vendors, entertainment recalling “days Curb Feelersgone by” and half-a-million spectators, nostalgia is apparently still quite hip!

And — for the first time this year — the Follies was honored to be a part of it.

With Showgirl-In-Waiting Belinda Smith-Schober (actually, the Follies’ “still too young to be in the show” assistant choreographer) and our own "Veronica" proudly representing the Follies at VIP events and riding in vintage vehicles, joined by Follies ambassadors in the Follies own vendor Percolatorbooth, we visited with thousands of fans who plan to “rendezvous” next in Palm Springs when the Follies begins its own tribute to the magical Route 66 era.Continental Kit

But before you leave the house, be sure to unplug the percolator.

Here and below are just a few of the photos taken at the Rendezvous, but we invite you to visit our online gallery to view the entire collection and/or download your own photos.

ROUTE 66 MEMORIES

“I have such fond memories of driving on Route 66 cross country when I was a kid.  My brother and I always read the Burma Shave signs.”

So recalls 14-season Follies Long-Legged Lovely Glenda Guilfoyle regarding her memories of historic Route 66 (raised in San Bernardino).

Burma ShaveSince this season’s Follies theme was announced, we’ve heard countless other folks tell us what Route 66 means to them and the cherished memories it conjures.

Therefore, we’d like to invite you to email us your own recollections and photos of this iconic highway. Whether personally traveling the Road, watching the TV show, listening to the famous song, seeing images on the Big Screen, or such literary references as in Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath,” America’s Highway means something different to everyone.

Simply email us your reminisces and photos to memories@psfollies.com and we will be happy to add them to the Follies Fans page of our website.
