Greetings, Darlins'

Riff Markowitz | The Follies Man

It’s once again “holiday time” at the Fabulous Follies.

RockwellWith the long election cycle finally over and gasoline prices (thankfully!) returning to terrestrial levels, we can now happily turn our thoughts to the good tidings of the season and planning cherished time with family and friends.

Thanksgiving is next week and we have scheduled six shows for your holiday enjoyment. Don’t forget that our Thanksgiving matinee is a great way to keep beloved houseguests out-of-the-kitchen until mealtime. Aunt Martha’s (dreadful) cornbread stuffing may be a family tradition, but it tastes even better when you’ve had a chance to dump it and start over while she’s away at the Plaza Theatre.

After a year’s preparation, our all-new “Follies Souvenir Book, Third Edition” is now available for online ordering. We hope you enjoy this wonderful remembrance of your last Follies’ visit or as a treasured gift to the uninitiated.

And if anyone doubts the shapely beauty of 66-year-old gams, I invite you to view the fetching photos at the bottom of this newsletter. We now just need to work on his 66-year-old beard!

(lt. to rt.) Randy Doney, Mitzi Gaynor and Alton Ruff at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. As reported in our August newsletter, Mitzi Gaynor and one of her original dancers, 10-season Follies veteran Randy Doney, re-united this summer in Los Angeles to recreate a number from her 1969 TV spectacular, Mitzi’s 2nd Special. But this was just prologue to tomorrow’s release of Miss Gaynor’s newest DVD entitled  Mitzi Gaynor Razzle Dazzle: The Special Years in which our Mr. Doney is featured prominently, in both performance and interviews.

Finally, it’s become somewhat of a tradition here at the Follies to post our “Holidays Through the Years” postcard on our website’s homepage. If you haven’t yet viewed it this season, don’t delay as it’s only there for a brief two months!

In closing, as I reflect upon the many challenges our country now faces, I can’t help but believe we are moving forward into an even better America.  We are all witness to history; we are present at a moment of great change, and, I am certain that our America will overcome this unfortunate time . . . we always do!

So, until next month, just stay alive!

FOLLIES “ON THE ROAD”

Ambassador Manager Dolores Dey in Golden Shores, Arizona along historic Route 66.
Rex
Ambassador Rex Waggoner in Kingman, Arizona also along historic Route 66.
The Follies Ambassador Team travels far-and-wide “spreading the word” about this world-famous show and serves as proud representatives at special events and functions.

Recently, Ambassador Manager Dolores Dey and Ambassador Rex Waggoner motored over 1,000 miles through Arizona and Nevada (traveling Route 66 wherever possible!), telling folks about the Follies’ newest edition Get Your Kicks! Along the way, they hosted “behind the scenes” educational presentations in three different towns to packed houses!

Part of the day’s events included attending the 2008 Marine Birthday Pageant.
The Follies has been a long-time sponsor of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in nearby Twentynine Palms, California. Recently, the base again invited Follies representatives as part of their second annual Sponsorship Appreciation Day – a fascinating daylong base tour, which this year, included attendance at the 2008 Marine Birthday Pageant.

Follies Ambassadors Marilyn Purdy and Adam Mick, both Korean War Veterans, enjoyed the gracious hospitality shown them by Brig. Gen. Charles Gurganus and all base personnel.

Semper FidelisSpecial Note: For those of you who might like the opportunity to say “thank you” to Marine families, the Follies is again hosting the annual visit by spouses of deployed Marines during the evening performance on Wednesday, December 3. Under the auspices of the base’s “Operation Enduring Families” program, this and other activities help ease the difficulty of separation from loved ones serving abroad, especially during the holiday season.  If you’ve attended this wonderful evening in past years, you’ll know how inspiring it is to meet these courageous individuals.
