Happy Holidays, Darlins'

Riff Markowitz | The Follies Man

Jack BennyIn the 1940s and 50s, the legendary Jack Benny often broadcast his weekly Jell-O Radio Show from our Plaza Theatre stage during the winter months. He encouraged his listeners in colder climes to escape the sleet and snow of their hometowns for the perpetual sunshine of glorious Palm Springs.

Sixty years later, I'd like extend that same invitation. If you long for a white Christmas, you'll see it on stage at the Follies during our second act (through December 31). As a New York native raised in Toronto, I can honestly say that it's more fun to watch White Christmas, than shovel it.

And, based upon your email responses from last month's missive, it seems we've created something of a bona fide sex symbol here at the Follies this season. You can read more about the "bearded man" who portrays our stripping Santa or watch the Follies show segment, which created all the buzz.

This adjacent photo is of a lovely young lady, Ally Castanon-Beck, we've literally watched grow up here at the Follies. Her god-grandparents starting bringing her to the show at 10 years of age and now, at 24, she is married and expecting her first child in February. If it's a boy, I think the name "Riff" has a charming ring to it.

We also had a pleasant surprise last month when Candace Foster, the official Classic Ms. Route 66, attended a Follies performance. The "Classic" part is because she's in the "50 and older" category. As you can see from the photo, I'm sure the pageant judges asked for a copy of her birth certificate to confirm her claim.

Our "Parting Shot" at the bottom of this newsletter is a couture ensemble recently assembled by our ever-so-talented costume designer, Thi Thu Hanyak. The new Follies cast member who models it is a platinum blonde who speaks ONLY Russian, so the design and fit was quite a process. Ms. Hanyak's creation is definitely a howling success.

Yesterday was the final Follies performance before our holiday break. We resume on December 27 with eight performances through New Year's Eve. Follies cast members are now visiting with family and friends, and buying presents for children and grandchildren.

But perhaps the best gift we can give each other is time spent with loved ones. During the holidays, we often see multiple-generation families sharing the Follies together, with our music and dance being the trigger for exchanging stories of how it "used to be." This is how the most precious memories are created … and we look forward to being a part of that experience here at our beloved Plaza Theatre.

So, until next month, just stay alive!

GUEST STAR FREDA PAYNE ON KDES RADIO

Follies guest star Freda Payne has received a significant amount of airplay lately on KDES Radio, the Desert's favorite Oldies station, due — in part — to the recent show attendance by the their popular morning personality and program director Danny Fox.

Their recent interview was like a trip down memory lane by two experts of a remarkable musical era.

MARINE SPOUSES MAKE ANNUAL VISIT

Marine spouses surrounding (from lt.) the Follies' Joni Naber, Freda Payne, Riff Markowitz and Lark Romero.
On December 3, twenty-seven  Marine spouses enjoyed a night at the Follies hosted by Follies Founders Riff Markowitz and Mary Jardin. Preceded by a delicious dinner hosted by Mario's Restaurant in Rancho Mirage, this annual event was arranged through the Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center's "Operation Enduring Families" program. Started during the first Gulf War to encourage family members to remain on base during deployment, rather than move back home, its purpose is also to strengthen connections between Marine families and adjacent communities.

Their visit has been a highlight of the Follies' Holiday Season for six consecutive years.

GENERAL PATTON MEMORIAL MUSEUM 20TH ANNUAL VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION

The Follies was honored to take part in the recent Veterans Day Celebration commemorating the 20th anniversary of the General Patton Memorial Museum, located in Chiriaco Summit, California.

General Patton chose the area outside Palm Springs (and stretching to Arizona and Nevada) for his Desert Training Center as the terrain so mimicked the harsh conditions of North Africa. Ultimately, one million troops were trained there before heading into combat during WWII.

At the stroke of midnight (or "Rio de Janeiro midnight" for matinee-goers), the Follies Man and cast will join audiences with party hats and noisemakers to welcome the New Year under a shower of confetti.

TOYS FOR TOTS – A PLAZA THEATRE HOLIDAY TRADITION

Since 1947, the U.S. Marine Corps has been looking after America's needy children during the holidays through the Toys for Tots program. By distributing over 300 million new toys since the program began, Marines deliver a message of hope and let children know that someone cares. The Follies is pleased and proud to participate as a toy drop-off location for the 12th year.

As you can see from the photos below, groups this year have been especially generous in bringing toys when they visit, even in these difficult economic times. For this, we would like to express our sincerest of thanks.

The last pick-up by the Marines here at the Plaza Theatre for this holiday season will be on December 14. If you're not attending the Follies before then, please consider donating a toy at a collection bin in your own town.
