Vol. XVIII, Issue VII
January 2009

Greetings, Darlins'

Riff Markowitz | The Follies Man

It's 2009! If you were one of the enthusiastic revelers who helped us usher in the New Year during either of our shows on December 31, I hope you have a better recollection of that evening than I. Apparently, our beloved "World's Oldest Showgirl" added a few drops of her special "youth tonic" to the backstage punch bowl between shows and, well . . .

But from that rather raucous beginning, we're getting ready to open our new spring edition this Wednesday with an even bigger bang!

42nd StreetReplacing the Follies holiday segment is our entirely new salute to the legendary Broadway show, 42nd Street. Hear the beat of dancing feet as our cast taps away to the strains of that show's most-famous melodies.

And then, for the first time ever on the Plaza Theatre stage is guest star extraordinaire Susan Anton. This Long-Legged Lovely has shone from Broadway to Las Vegas to Hollywood, and you can read more about this multi-talented dynamo below.

Route 66 A Photo JournalWe've recently added some wonderful new Route 66 merchandise to our online store. If you've visited our lobby this season, you've no doubt seen the iconic Route 66 images lining our walls by noted Route 66 photographer Michael Campanelli. We're very happy to be the first to carry his new book "Route 66: A Photo Journal", which chronicles all 2,248 miles of the historic highway.

Finally, I thought a nice way to start the New Year would be to share with you some of the quite lovely patron emails we've received thus far this season at the conclusion of this newsletter. I always enjoy hearing from you, so please feel free to reply to this email whenever you'd like to ask a question or send me a comment. They go directly to my "Inbox."

And the following was recently posted on the popular travel site TripAdvisor.com, which summarizes what we hope every patron feels upon leaving a Follies performance:

I cannot think of one negative thing to say about the Palm Springs Follies. Every time I see [your show], I know that I will be entertained for three hours. I leave all the worries, negativity [and] ill will outside of the theater, and become enthralled with the performance. We laugh, cry and watch in awe at every singer, dancer and entertainer. We'll be back again next year.

So, until next month, just stay alive!

MULTI-TALENTED STAR IN FOLLIES DEBUT

Long-Legged Lovely becomes a singular attraction with the appearance of Susan Anton on center stage as guest star of The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies.

The long-stemmed 5'11½" beauty is from apple-growing country east of Yucaipa, half an hour from Palm Springs — Oak Glen is her hometown — which virtually makes her a local celebrity.  Born in 1950, she was a Miss California (1969) and second place runner-up in the 1970 Miss America pageant, but quickly established herself professionally in the Broadway-Las Vegas-Hollywood orbit as a multi-talented theatrical, TV and silver screen personality.

Anton always was an eye-catcher, but the blonde-maned, elegant California Girl mastered pleasing the ear to enhance her image as an entertainer for more than three decades.

Killin' TimeHer very first recording single, Killin' Time, hit the Top 10 on the country music charts.  Her mega-hit album, Foxy, earned her a Gold Record in Japan.

However, the music has always been augmented by her striking looks and vibrant personality.  She co-starred in the original Broadway cast of Tommy Tune's and the Tony-Award winning musical, The Will Rogers Follies Before that, she had done a straight dramatic role on the Great White Way in Hurlyburly, David Rabe's Pulitzer Prize-winning play directed by Mike Nichols.  This versatility has been omnipresent in a long career covering hundreds of roles in television and movies.

GoldengirlShe received a Golden Globe nomination as best new female star for the film, Goldengirl, and co-starred in the Las Vegas production of the Broadway musical, Hairspray, opposite Harvey Fierstein.  Other notable credits include playing the part of Susan Williams in Stop Susan Williams episodes of the NBC serial-series, The Cliffhangers; two seasons as a regular on the TV series Baywatch; starring in her own NBC-TV variety show, Presenting Susan Anton; working with country great Mel Tillis in a television special, Mel and Susan Together; and touring with the Rockettes for seven years in the Great Radio City Music Hall Spectacular.

Susan AntonEarlier Anton sightings included a hitch as the provocative centerpiece in quirky ads for Muriel Cigars.

In 1992, she married actor/director Jeff Lester. Through their own production company, Big Picture Studios, Anton has been the executive producer of an award-winning short film, The Last Real Cowboys, starring Billy Bob Thornton, and a short documentary, Speed of Life.

But it's on center stage that Susan Ellen Anton has the greatest impact on Follies patrons.
