Greetings, Darlins'
 In Sixteen Days
After 18 years, you'd think launching another edition of the Follies would be easy. It could be. All we'd have to do is change a few costumes and recycle a song or two. But that's not our promise to you, our beloved Follies Fans. We are committed to making each new edition of the Fabulous Follies our best ever! Which is why producing the Follies' 19th edition seems to be even more difficult than producing the first! And in sixteen days, when Let The Good Times Roll! debuts, you'll see exactly what I mean.
To help illustrate the above, we've included a short video of the activity (a.k.a. chaos) going on behind-the-scenes right now as we prepare for opening day. But you'll have to visit for yourself to see how it all turns out!
Parrot Under Glass
I guess he's actually "behind glass," but I'll explain that later. As you know, ventriloquist extraordinaire Sammy King graced the Plaza Theatre stage for four seasons during the past decade. Performing for us last season was his retirement engagement, but he did give one final performance in July at the Vent Haven International Ventriloquist Convention to a crowd of 425 of his ventriloquist peers. A fifteen-minute standing ovation followed his performance and then Sammy handed over "Francisco" to his new "keeper." There wasn't a dry eye in the house as he and his parrot ended their 50-year partnership. Francisco is now proudly perched in the Vent Haven Museum between his own peers, "Senor Wences" and Paul Winchell's "Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff." We are proud to have shared Mr. King's legendary talent with Follies audiences through the years. While Mr. King is no longer performing, he is now mentoring a new generation of ventriloquists and his puppet-making skills (which are considerable) can be seen in this season's Follies holiday show (Hint: Hassidic Snowman).
Another of Mr. King's contributions to this season's Follies is his introduction to us of ventriloquist Brad Cummings and his prehistoric sidekick "Rex." When one "vent" recommends another, you know he's GOT to be good!
Davenport's Dancing Diva
Or so reads a headline from the October/November issue of Our Iowa Magazine. For many years, the Follies has enjoyed a warm relationship with Roy and Bobbie Reiman, who are perhaps the most successful magazine entrepreneurs in the nation. Along with their flagship Reminisce Magazine, they've created over a dozen widely read titles with millions of loyal readers. Their newest publication is (the beautiful) Our Iowa Magazine, and we are delighted they have featured the Follies' own Iowan, Jill Owens, in their current issue. You'll learn how a little girl from Davenport made it to Broadway, Radio City, TV, movies and now the Follies!
‘Tis the Season
As I write this, I am slowly regaining consciousness, which can only mean one thing: my allergy medication is wearing off. But by the time you arrive on October 28 for the Follies' new season, the golf courses will all be green, the petunias will all be planted and the beautiful weather—for which Palm Springs is world famous—will have returned.
So, until next month, please just stay alive!
New Year's Eve Seating Still Available
Many of you have told us you've made a New Year's Eve tradition of attending the Follies. Some of you haven't missed a December 31 performance in 18 years! The Follies holds tradition in high regard, so we're reminding you now to reserve your tickets while they're still available.
With special show times of 3:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., you will first be welcomed to the Plaza Theatre with a courtyard champagne reception. Next, you'll find the theater lobby decked out in holiday finery along with special New Year's décor. Then, when you reach your seat, you'll receive a gift bag containing a Follies poster, streamers, hat and noisemaker.
Finally, at the appointed hour ("Rio de Janeiro New Year's" for matinee goers), you'll be covered in a cascade of confetti to the strains of Auld Lang Syne while the Follies Man and cast happily join the audience in welcoming for 2010.
Tickets are going fast to both performances with the early show still having the best selection. Log on soon to www.psfollies.com to purchase your tickets for "New Year's Eve at the Follies!"
New Merchandise Arrives at Follies Online Store
It's like Christmas here in Follies Land with the arrival of our new 19th-season souvenir merchandise. But why wait until your first Follies visit to start enjoying these unique and coveted items? For either yourself or as a treasured gift, our online store allows you to purchase them right now!
Perhaps the most anticipated of these is our "soon-to-arrive" Great Moments At the Follies Vol. 2 CD. This over 90-minute collection of music and comedy features many of the Follies' most-spectacular production numbers, boffo guest star performances, the riotous comedy of our renowned variety acts, and, of course, the wit and wisdom of the Follies Man. The approximate ship date for this item is October 26.
Let The Good Times Roll! is now featured on colorful tee shirts, coffee mugs and fashionable tote bags, and our new selection of exquisite holiday ornaments evokes all the glamour and glitz of a Follies performance.
Finally, a special find in the Follies warehouse allows us to now offer—for a limited time only—a complete set of Follies souvenir books containing all three full-color editions. What better way to recall the Follies' entire 19-year history?
The Follies only orders a limited supply of souvenir merchandise each season, so be sure to order soon while there's still the best selection!
